Gummi Bear Chandelier

This is an absolutely gorgeous chandelier… and it’s made from Gummi Bears! A Gummi Bear chandelier …how original! …and beautiful!

If you’re not familiar with Gummi Bears they are a small, rubbery-textured confectionery which originated in Germany. The popular gelatin-based candies are roughly 20mm long (approximately 3/4 of an inch), shaped in the form of a bear, and are available in different colors and flavors.

Who would have thought to make a chandelier out of Gummi Bears? And do so so artistically and visually appealing.

Well, YaYa Chou did. In correspondence with Miss Chou, she stated 35 pounds of Gummi Bears were used in the chandelier, though she didn’t count the individual Gummi Bears. The total weight of the chandelier is 45 pounds. Miss Chou said it took 2 months to make and that she couldn’t work more than 6 hours a day due to blistering on her fingers (from threading the Gummi Bears).

Chou, born and raised in Taiwan, moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to study Experimental Animation. Being inspired by scene and set design for clay animation, the award-winning filmmaker turned her interests to sculpture and installation. Without formal training in the visual arts, Chou remains a self-taught mixed-media artist.

Chou’s works have been shown in galleries and museums around the country, including the Museum of Modern Art , New York and the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Virginia. Her works have been featured in Fiberarts magazine, and in books and newspapers in the U.S. and Taiwan.
